Located in the southern-most part of Solano County, Vallejo enjoys a waterfront atmosphere that includes Mare Island Strait, Carquinez Strait and San Pablo Bay. It is located approximately 45 minutes, or 40 miles, between two major cities in Northern California, San Francisco and Sacramento. The city is located within the California Coastal Ranges.
The city is named after General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, a native California, leading proponent of California's statehood, and one of the first members of the California State Senate; the neighboring city of Benicia is named for his wife, Francisca Benicia Carillo de Vallejo.
Vallejo has twice served as the capital of the state of California: once in 1852 and again in 1853, both periods being brief. The State Capitol building burned to the ground in the 1880s and the Vallejo Fire Department requested aid from the Fire Department at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. As there were no bridges at that time, the Mare Island Fire Department had to be ferried across the Napa River, arriving to find only the foundation remaining. This was the first recorded mutual aid response in the state of California.
Some of the first Europeans drawn to the Vallejo area were attracted by the sulfur springs; in the year 1902 the area was named Blue Rock Springs. It was also known as White Sulfur Springs and that was the name of the road leading to it from town, today shortened to "Springs Road".
The Mare Island Naval Shipyard (MINSY) was the first United States Navy base established on the Pacific Ocean. The Napa River goes through the Mare Island Strait and separates the peninsula shipyard (Mare Island, California) from the main portion of the city of Vallejo. MINSY made a name for itself as the premier US West Coast submarine port as well as serving as the controlling force in San Francisco Bay Area shipbuilding efforts during World War II. The base closed in 1996 and has gone through several redevelopment phases. It was registered as a California Historical Landmark in 1960, and parts of it were declared a National Historic Landmark District in 1975.
There are currently approximately 118,358 people living in the city of Vallejo. The population density 3,859 per square mile. The median age of resident in the city is 38.7, which is slightly higher than both the state average of 35.6 and the national average of 37.4. Most households are families of 3. The majority of residents are English speaking, with the next commonly spoken language being Spanish. The workforce is primarily made up of blue collar jobs, with roughly 33% of the force being white collar positions.
Weather is moderate and comfortable throughout the entirety of the year. Vallejo has a mild Mediterranean climate that in many ways is a mix between the cooler coastal climate and the hotter-summer interior areas. Vallejo is influenced by its position on the east shore of San Pablo Bay, but is less sheltered from inland heatwaves than areas directly on or nearer the Pacific such as San Francisco and Oakland.
The city's ferry terminal and ferry service have served as a model for the rest of the Bay Area, helping make Vallejo a transportation and commuter hub for the North Bay.It is the site of the Blue and Gold Fleet, the ferry commuter system serving several points in the San Francisco Bay Area on a daily basis.
The city recently earned Main Street designation, and as a result its downtown area will receive a host of benefits ranging from on-site training in effective commercial district revitalization, technical assistance, consulting services, networking activities, and site assessments from California Main Street. These benefits will help with the city's revitalization efforts.
Waterfront and Mare Island redevelopment have become a community effort, with input from residents helping shape the future of what could become the most important economic generator for the city.

Neighboring Fairfield is home to the Travis Air Force Base, which is under the operational control of the Air Mobility Command. It is located just 3 miles east of the main business district in Fairfield. The 60th Air Mobility Wing is the largest wing in the Air Force’s AMC command, and is the host unit at Travis AFB. Travis AFB handles more cargo and passengers through its airport than any other military terminal in the nation. The base has had a major impact on the Solano County community, as many military families and veterans have chosen to make the city their permanent home.
