Parks and Recreation

There are several terrific parks to enjoy in East Vallejo!  Wardlaw East & West Parks, a combined 12.84 acres of great amenities, including:  Turfed play areas, soccer field, play equipment and basket ball courts (at adjoining Wardlaw school), multi-use field, off street parking, Bantam soccer field. Just recently completed; a 17,000 square-foot hybrid skateboard and BMX park, a 2.2-acre dog park, picnic areas, restrooms, off-street parking, and a pedestrian bridge connection to the Blue Rock Springs corridor. You also have the larger Blue Rock Springs Park right close by featuring large picnic areas with BBQ’s, open turf play areas children’s play equipment, a small lake and island with ducks and peacocks, off street parking and restrooms. A hiking trail provides access to the ridge of the Sulfur Springs Mountain for spectacular views of Vallejo and the Napa River. Finally, there is the newly constructed Northgate Neighborhood Park.

There are currently approximately 118,358 people living in the city of Vallejo. The population density 3,859 per square mile. The median age of resident in the city is 38.7, which is slightly higher than both the state average of 35.6 and the national average of 37.4. Most households are families of 3. The majority of residents are English speaking, with the next commonly spoken language being Spanish. The workforce is primarily made up of blue collar jobs, with roughly 33% of the force being white collar positions.

Weather

Weather is moderate and comfortable throughout the entirety of the year. Vallejo has a mild Mediterranean climate that in many ways is a mix between the cooler coastal climate and the hotter-summer interior areas. Vallejo is influenced by its position on the east shore of San Pablo Bay, but is less sheltered from inland heatwaves than areas directly on or nearer the Pacific such as San Francisco and Oakland.

The city recently earned Main Street designation, and as a result its downtown area will receive a host of benefits ranging from on-site training in effective commercial district revitalization, technical assistance, consulting services, networking activities, and site assessments from California Main Street. These benefits will help with the city's revitalization efforts.

Waterfront and Mare Island redevelopment have become a community effort, with input from residents helping shape the future of what could become the most important economic generator for the city.

Whether you’re a hiker, biker, or just looking for some time in the fresh air, there are ample outdoor activities to take part in in and around Vallejo. Exploring Blue Rock Springs Park and the wildlife-rich Bay Area favorite, Rockville Hills Regional Park, can keep you and your family plenty busy. There are also multiple award-winning golf courses in the area, if you want to spend a day out on the links.
If wine-tasting more your scene, there are more than a dozen wineries in neighboring American Canyon, growing over two-dozen grape varietals. Located in the southern-most part of California wine country, American Canyon is less crowded and more peaceful than its neighbor of Napa Valley.

Military

Neighboring Fairfield is home to the Travis Air Force Base, which is under the operational control of the Air Mobility Command. It is located just 3 miles east of the main business district in Fairfield. The 60th Air Mobility Wing is the largest wing in the Air Force’s AMC command, and is the host unit at Travis AFB. Travis AFB handles more cargo and passengers through its airport than any other military terminal in the nation. The base has had a major impact on the Solano County community, as many military families and veterans have chosen to make the city their permanent home. It is also the largest employer in the entire county and greatly helps the area’s overall economic stability.

There are numerous schools located throughout the city for children to attend. East Vallejo is served by the Vallejo Unified School District. Vallejo Unified School District has an enrollment of over 23,000 in 28 schools. There are also parochial schools, pre-schools, and day care centers in the area. Over 30 colleges and universities within the Bay Area and Central Valley are within easy commuting distance from East Vallejo.
