Location

American Canyon (previously known as Napa Junction) is a city located in southern Napa County, California, 35 miles northeast of San Francisco in the San Francisco Bay Area  just east of the Napa River. It is located on Highway 29, approximately 5 miles south of the city of Napa and borders the city of Vallejo, Solano County. Interstate Highway 80 passes three miles east of American Canyon. Out of peak hours, San Francisco to the southwest and Sacramento to the north-east are each less than one hour's drive on I-80. Two miles south of American Canyon, Highway 37 goes west over to Novato, Marin County where it joins with Highway 101, an alternative route to San Francisco via the Golden Gate Bridge.

History

American Canyon, as a city, launched after the end of World War II. Prior to that, it was a rural community south of the City of Napa. The very first subdivision there was McKnight Acres. Unlike other subdivisions in the area, owners bought the lots and built their homes by themselves. Residents of American Canyon began the long process of incorporating the city back in 1963. The city was officially incorporated in 1992.

Demographics

There are currently approximately 20,000 people living in the city of American Canyon. The population density 3,386 per square mile. The median age of resident in the city is 35.5, which is on par with the state average of 35.6 and slightly lower than the national average of 37.4. Most households are families of 3.5. The majority of residents are English speaking, with the next commonly spoken language being Spanish. The workforce is primarily made up of blue collar jobs, with roughly 35% of the force being white collar positions.

Weather

The climate is generally mild, with northeasterly winds from the San Francisco Bay. Summer temperatures range from 50 to 90 degrees, and winter temperatures range from 40 to 60 degrees. The average number of clear days per year is 265 and average rainfall is 24 inches per year.

American Canyon has a little something for everyone! There are plenty of thriving independent business throughout American Canyon with unique shopping and events available. There is no shortage of restaurants in the city with everything from delicious steakhouses to traditional Italian, and all cuisines in between. Enjoy a swim at the Philip West Aquatic Center or fishing on the Napa River.

Starting with the first signs of Spring and lasting well into the fall, American Canyon has multiple farm stands available to residents near and far. These stands are all family-owned and provide locally grown produce, flowers, and crafts. There are also a multitude of local annual events all year-long. From the Jazz in the Park concerts at Main St. Park to the City’s annual 4th f July festivities. this city loves to come together to celebrate. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo is also just a couple of miles away.

Whether you’re a hiker, biker, or just looking for some time in the fresh air, there are ample outdoor activities to take part in in and around American Canyon. Exploring the steep grasslands of Lynch Canyon and the wildlife-rich Bay Area favorite, Rockville Hills Regional Park in Fairfield, can keep you and your family plenty busy. There are also multiple award-winning golf courses in the area, if you want to spend a day out on the links.
If wine-tasting more your scene, there are wineries galore in American Canyon and the entire Napa Valley, growing over two-dozen grape varietals.

Military

Neighboring Fairfield is home to the Travis Air Force Base, which is under the operational control of the Air Mobility Command. It is located just 3 miles east of the main business district in Fairfield. The 60th Air Mobility Wing is the largest wing in the Air Force’s AMC command, and is the host unit at Travis AFB. Travis AFB handles more cargo and passengers through its airport than any other military terminal in the nation. The base has had a major impact on the Solano County/Napa County community, as many military families and veterans have chosen to make the area their permanent home. It is also the largest employer in the entire county and greatly helps the area’s overall economic stability.
